Foothills Kitchen in Knotty Alder

A representative project showing how we build a warm, character-driven kitchen around knotty alder — the wood that suits the Treasure Valley’s foothill and mountain-modern homes.

Foothills Kitchen in Knotty Alder — representative custom cabinetry by Alderwood Cabinets

A representative capability piece — it illustrates the materials, construction, and design approach we bring to this kind of project, not a photograph of a specific past client’s home.

The concept

Knotty alder’s tight character knots and warm tone make it the natural choice for a foothills kitchen meant to feel handmade rather than showroom-perfect. This piece pairs a stained perimeter with a substantial island, letting the wood carry the room.

How we build it

The cabinetry is drawn to the wall, then built in our Treasure Valley shop with plywood cases and dovetailed, solid-wood drawer boxes on full-extension soft-close slides. A full-height pantry wall replaces the old soffit-and-upper look, adding storage and cleaner lines.

Details that matter

Deep drawer banks for pots, an appliance garage to keep the counters clear, and hardware sized to the drawers — the small decisions that separate a custom kitchen from a catalog order. Alder is acclimated to local conditions before building so it stays stable through Idaho’s dry seasons.
